During a recent press event to shine the spotlight on Bethesda’s E3 line up, we managed to get a good look at the upcoming Wolfenstein: The New Order. It's poised to reignite the venerated series and is due to hit store shelves in the latter part of 2013. But this isn’t your same old zombie Nazi blood bath. This Wolfenstein is a reimagined game world though familiar faces will continue to star, including of course, B.J. Blazkowicz.
Wolfenstein: The New Order is being developed by Germany’s MachineGames. During the event, the team showed off the first ever demo of the game, something that E3 attendees will also be able to get their hands on during next month’s convention.
W: TNO takes place in 1960, in an alternate version of history. The Nazis won the war in 1945 and have gone on to conquer the entire world using mysterious technology. Players are sent to fight the Nazi war machines and are sent across Germany to infiltrate secret facilities and gain control of advanced war machines to ultimately be used against the creators.
It’s a seemingly impossible task. And even the demo is seemingly impossible work to get through. The developers themselves said it was quite hard and that the difficulty level was scaled to the max for the presentation as well as during the press hands-on time.
The game is looking very good at this point. The cinematic-style conversations are terrific though I found the voice acting to be a bit over the top. Even saying that, however, it was curiously effective and made me hate the enemy even more. All I can say is that “Bubi”, one of the first characters run into, is insipidly annoying. I wished I’d had the option to jam a knife in his eye but that would have flown in the face of the overall experience. Don’t say I didn’t warn you though.
Combat is fast and furious and it does a player credit to take advantage of all the weapons that can be found and to make friends with cover. Standing in the open for more than a few seconds will see a dead Blazkowicz faster than you can say, “Take cover!”
What makes Wolfenstein: The New Order a departure from its predecessors is the fact that MachineGames is working quite hard to ensure that it’s more than “just another shooter”. The goal is to provide a broader experience for players and to add an actual storyline for players to explore. From my perspective, there is a decent RPG element in W: TNO that isn’t present in earlier iterations of the series.
From the materials we were handed that day, players can expect metric ton of exciting shooter action with some light roleplaying elements thrown in.
The Assault: Experience intense first-person combat as you go up against oversized Nazi robots, hulking Super Soldiers and elite shock troops – all rendered in stunning detail with the id Tech 5 engine.
The Action: Wolfenstein's breath-taking set pieces feature intense mountain-top car chases, underwater exploration, player-controlled Nazi war machines, and much more – all combined to create an exhilarating action-adventure experience.
The Arsenal: Collect ultra-advanced Nazi-tech! Break into secret research facilities and heavily guarded weapon stashes to upgrade your tools of destruction.
The Adventure: Hi-octane action and thrilling adventure weaved together into a tightly paced, super immersive game narrative.
Overall, the demo was quite short and very difficult. The team has said that, of course, the final release version will have multiple difficulty levels for players to choose from so no worries, mates. Care Bears and Hardcores will both be happy.
