This past weekend was the third and final beta test for Defiance before its launch on April 2nd. Defiance is a new MMOS from Trion Worlds, the makers of RIFT. But, the interesting thing about Defiance is the TV show tie-in. We'll talk about that further on into the article. This article is going to be about my first time (of many) as an Ark Hunter.
At the very beginning you are asked what you want your account name to be. This name will be how anyone adds you as a friend. It's a generic name that will describe you so people will always know it's you regardless of what character you're using at the time.
A cutscene starts. It's a high-ranking military man telling everyone to take their seats because of some turbulence. A doctor, Karl Von Bach, thinks he's better than everyone and refuses to sit down until his gear double checked to be safe for landing. BOOM, the ship is hit by a rocket and in a hurry he decides to sit down. It's at this point you see two main characters in the eventual Defiance TV show (Premiering April 15th).
You're then taken to the character creation screen. You can pick between two different races at this time, but it's possible more are added as the game expands. Humans and Irathient for now. There are six other Votan (alien) races. I was given four different “Origins” to play: Veteran, Survivalist, Outlaw and Machinist. Now, these are NOT classes. There are no actual classes in this game. The origins provide a background for your character and give you your first outfit and starting weapons. No specific origin hinder the use of any weapons or abilities.
After I finished pimping out my character, I was thrown back into a cut scene. The military man yelled at me to take my seat. The doc then stood up for me and notes that I work for the doc, not the military. Von Bach then tells me that I'm an Ark Hunter and that he hasn't had time to properly tell me about my EGO. Turns out EGO is a hologram put into my head; very much like Cortana from the Halo franchise. As he's telling me about my EGO the ship it hit again and everyone must evac the ship in their own escape pod.
On the Planet's surface
After I ejected myself from the ship there's a new cut scene of a Irathient named Cass, who's coming to try to open my escape pod. I was in fact still alive I might add. She talks a little and then this loud pitched noise comes out and my character squeezes his head. Turns out it was my EGO trying to talk to me. She's eventually able to project herself enough and talk about what she is.
This is where the tutorial comes into play. She talks about shields, weapons and grenades. There are specific spots on the map that she'll send you to to pick up each item. On the way to each site you will have some enemies to fight along the way. This makes for some nice easy XP and start to get used to the game.
After I picked up all my gear she introduced me to four different EGO powers. Keep in mind any origin can use any EGO power. After I tested them all out I decided that the clone power was the best for me at the time. I clicked the power I wanted and proceeded to watch a bunch of little squares light up around the big one I just selected. These are the next powers I get to rank up. I assume that since there is no EGO cap, that I have seen, you can eventually have every power there is.
There's a huge ambush at the end of the tutorial. My EGO tells me that she can override some computer systems and tells me to run in and override the generator in the middle of the base. So I do, getting shot up like mad. I throw out the clone to make all of the NPC's fire at it. I overload the generator then start shooting the entire place up. For a little bit of time you have to fight off all the waves and make sure that the mutant's you're fighting don't turn off the override. BOOM the thing explodes and we're into the real game itself.
So now to find everyone
When I came too I saw my EGO standing out in front of me. I went up to her and she told me that she was picking up other drop pods and that we should be looking for Doc Von Bach. The ship was destroyed and crashed nose first into the planet. I ran to the first drop pod to find that the person inside... did not make it. She then told me that she had 4 other signals coming from Von Bach Industries people. They were all dead too, and none of them were the doc.
After searching for all the bodies my EGO tells me she picked up a radio transmission, it's the general. He is letting everyone know to calm down in the ship and that they're going to get them out, sure you will dude. He also asks for anyone who can fight to come to the main base. Naturally, I jog my way over to them, and who do I find, Cass. She wants to know what's going on too. We go inside and talk to the general. He tells me that I need to go take out the snipes on the ridge over yonder. Cass informs him that those “mutants” are ex soldiers that were left on the planet and never taken off and have mutated with the land.
I go across the way and take down the enemy camp. After I turn off all of the generators and start taking out some of the enemies, a giant mutant comes out to say hello to me. I whipped out my shotgun and fought alongside the other Ark Hunters that were there and we took this guy down! I ran down the hill and back over to where the military camp was. I received my first ATV. This would be the first of many vehicles I plan on having in my collection.
Stay tuned for the next Entry.
This was just the first day of my journey of being an Ark Hunter. More chapters will be written and some will even be streamed to the masses. Make sure to stay tuned to FPSGuru as your Defiance news headquarters. We'll be having patch notes, reviews, diary entries, game development information and much much more. On April 1st we will have my preview/review of the game just before launch!
