The results are in, the drum roll has begun, and man are the awards ripe for picking. Last week we gave you guys four different awards with a whole bunch of nominated titles which you can check again here if you'd like. Before scrolling down and checking out who won what and before announcing those awards, I'd just like to take a second. Every year it's crazy to see what developers from companies of all sizes are able to create. The year of 2012 is there first year I made my way into the video game industry writing about games, shooters in particular. The years I've spent playing them have been great, but going behind the scenes and really keeping up with every mention of a shooter is dazzling. Throughout this year I've come across so many shooters that have been a ton of fun to play and work with along with a bunch of great ones I look forward to in the coming year. I just want to let you know, it was tough to decide what title won each award and I actually do mean that. But remember at the end of the day, if you really put the time into developing your game and all that passion, then you've made a great game or are going to.
On November 20th, Sony Online Entertainment released the comeback of PlanetSide with PlanetSide 2. Bringing into play massive battles between three different empires across the many continents on Auraxis. Players fight it out whether in vehicles, air, or as just plain ol' infantry. Everyone can make a difference in the forever ongoing battle in PlanetSide 2. PlanetSide 2 has brought us a unique experience that we'll enjoy free for a long time to come. Good job everyone that developed, tested, marketed, PR'd, published and anything else I may be forgetting in making PlanetSide 2 a great success.
Natural Selection 2
In the October of 2002 was certainly a good year for a man named Charlie Cleveland. That was the day his Half-Life mod Natural Selection launched. Many publications praised Natural Selection when it was just a mod. Well, a decade later the team Unknown Worlds Entertainment led by Cleveland took it to a whole new level and launched their sequel, Natural Selection 2. Then the fight between the aliens and marines had begun! Natural Selection 2 is a great game that combines elements of different genres so well and still brings us incredible gameplay that we can hop in and play within moments. I'm sure it's been a long run and I bet you guys have a lot of memories developing it and will make many more continuing to. Good job Unknown Worlds, good job.
The Last of Us
Man, Naughty Dog, I remember when you first made us all jump through hoops trying to figure out what an ant eating a leaf meant. Next thing we knew it was part of BBC Planet Earth episode, well played. If you're able to create that much hype over a fungus called cordyceps, then I can only imagine how great The Last of Us will be when we get our hands on it. Every time anything new arises on The Last of Us, everyone is in shock and can barely wait for the release. That my friend, is why you've scored this award and I wouldn't be surprised if you score another one in 2013. Congratulations Naughty Dog and good job everyone over at Sony Online Entertainment.
Drum roll please! Just do it, tap your desk, your table, uh.. your laptop, whatever is next to you. Do it! I demand you do it, or else I won't give away this award. Hey, you, I'm waiting. Oh, you already are? Sorry. FPSGuru's Game of the Year award goes to......
Far Cry 3
Our review is still in the works, but I've beat it already myself and I know just how phenomenal it is. The campaign, the sights, the wingsuit especially, the combat, just everything. Ubisoft did a great job with Far Cry 3 in taking you into its world. The first time I got my hands on Far Cry 3, I literally played it for I believe 14 hours with breaks of course. But, after looking at 14 hours after getting off, that wasn't a pretty sight. I know of people who have spent probably twice that exploring the island for those relics all over. Honestly, there's one guy I've really gotta give props to, Michael Mando. The voice and face of our antagonist Vaas. Whomever I've talked to, whatever tweet I've read, whatever article I've read, etc. people have always said they wish Vaas was seen more in Far Cry 3. After seeing those, "The Far Cry Experience" episodes with Christopher Plasse and him, I lost it. I've laughed hysterically at those episodes and I would suggest searching for them on YouTube if you haven't seen it yet. Overall, Far Cry 3 has been an incredible open world experience that it stole this award. Well done Ubisoft and every single person that was involved in making Far Cry 3. Great job Ubisoft Montreal, Massive, Reflections, Shanghai, Red Storm, and all those other great people not mentioned.
